Content to make you money

Thirdly, you need to make money somehow. So this sort of content may be a paid review, a sponsored post, or a product that you highly endorse and get affiliate sales for. It is important that you use this sort of content sparingly as you don’t want to lose readers as you are spamming them with products to often.

Content used for promotion

Content that is used for promotion is content that you write that promoter’s your blog. For example, it could be a blog post that outlines the rules of a competition you are having.

The main aim of writing this sort of content is to get your readers to spread your name and brand around and to increase your blog subscriber count.

Content to spread around on social media

This sort of content should be created to become viral on social media websites. The aim of the content is to be popular on websites such as Digg. By creating viral content, you will be receiving a lot of new visitors to your blog which hopefully, your content can entice them to stay and return.

Content to promote your content

The final type of content is content that promotes your existing content. For example, if you have written a lot of posts about a similar topic, you may wish to create a post that links to each of those items. It’s also a great way to bring your older content back to life.

Make The “No One Is Reading My Blog” Feelings Vanish

March 5th, 2010

If your blog is a few months old, and you don’t have the audience that you want, or your blog is only receiving one hit per day (i.e. just you), you may feel that your hard work is going to waste. Here are some tips that can make the “No one is reading my blog” feeling turn into “I love that so many people are reading my blog”.

Target Your Audience

The first thing that you need to do is to ensure that you are targeting a particular audience. If your blog topics are all over the place from Technology to Sports, to Environment, you aren’t targeting a niche. Pick one topic and stick with it. By doing so will increase you subscription count because readers know they are getting the information that they want.

Don’t Check Your Stats

The simplest way to not have the “no one is reading my blog” feeling is to never check your blogs statistics. If you don’t know that no one is visiting your blog, you assume that people are. That way, the only feeling you may get is “No one is commenting on my blog”. Good bloggers spend time creating content, and developing an audience; not checking their Adsense or Analytical statistics every hour.

Make It Easy For People To Read and Comment

If people aren’t commenting on your blog, one reason could be that it is difficult for them to write a comment. So make it easy for people to comment by:

  • Allowing guests to write comments
  • Don’t have an impossible CAPTCHA that no one can read

You may also want to make commenting rewarding for readers. You can do this by:

  • Using DoFollow
  • Giving them something useful in return

If you need more ideas, have a read of 10 steps to get readers to comment on your blog.

Remember That Success Does Not Happen Within Minutes

If your blog is new, and you don’t have an existing reader-base or another blog to help promote your blog, you won’t get readers overnight. It takes time for your blog to get high rankings on Google, and for this to happen, you need to have solid content, and content that an audience is willing to read.

Work Smart, Not Hard

To create good content, you may want to work smart and not hard. Don’t work hard by breaking your back over writing content after content, work smart by producing content efficiently and making it effective. Be efficient by recycling your old and forgotten content. That way you will have a new post that your new readers probably would never have read.

Promote Your Work, Brand and Name

One final reason for people not reading your blog is the simple fact that they have not found it. Make sure you promote your blog, individual posts, your brand, and name. Build quality backlinks, optimise your blog for search engines, or use various other methods to drive traffic to your blog.

Connect With Other Bloggers

It is also a good idea to connect with other bloggers that are in your niche. Treat them as a friend and not as an enemy, and help each other to build up your blogs. That is the secrete key to success.

3 Posts You Should Post At Least Once A Month

March 3rd, 2010

Every so often, you should take time out of your regular posting schedule and involve yourself with your readers a little more. Below, I have listed 3 different types of posts that you should spread out over the month (or every second or third month depending on how many posts you write). These 3 posts should be used as they have a number of benefits.

  • It increases the number of subscribers to your blog
  • You and your readers become closer together
  • It can give you fresh post idea’s for your blog
  • It makes your readers feel welcome
  • It point your readers in the right direction to get the most out of your blog
  • It helps to promote your blog
  • Improve your comment count

Every so often, remember to post these types of posts. But don’t post them too often as your regular readers may get sick of the.

1. Ask Readers To Subscribe To Your Blog

The first post is to ask your readers to subscribe to your blog, and make sure you give them a reason why to subscribe. In this post you could have a mini competition or a reward such as a free eBook to thank your readers for subscribing.

Tell your readers how they can subscribe to your blog via RSS, Email, Facebook, Twitter, or any other social networking site. By doing so, it helps improve your subscriber count, and gets your new readers who haven’t already subscribed to subscribed.

By writing this post, you will give your readers a little bit of a push, because they have not worked out the benefit of clicking the RSS logo in your blogs sidebar.

2. Ask Readers To Ask You A Question So You Can Answer

If you are running short on post ideas, you may want to ask your reader to ask you a question that you can answer in your next post. This is very useful as it helps you to produce content, and it helps your reader to learn new things that they want to know about.

3. Thank Your Readers For Reading And Commenting

One final post that you should post is a thank you post to thank your readers for reading, subscribing, and commenting to your blog. A successful blogger involves themselves with their readers, and to make your readers feel welcome and appreciated for their time on your blog, it is a good idea to thank them.

There are 3 posts that you should write most months. So I ask you. Do you use any of these posts in your blog? Have they worked for you?

How To Make Your Blog Posts Have An Impact On Your Readers

March 1st, 2010

If you subscribe to RSS feeds from many blogs, you may find that you don’t read every post, or read the post word-for-word. If you are a blog owner, you should know that you want to try and avoid this, and ensure your readers read all your posts word-for-word. So how do you go about this? Let’s find out.

Don’t Write Low Impact Posts

Unless you’re a famous celebrity, people don’t want to read about what you did for the day, or what you had for breakfast. These posts are worthless to the readers, and will be mostly skipped. By writing these posts, it will tend to make people unsubscribe from your blog as they are not receiving useful information.

Make Your Posts Useful

People don’t want to read things that aren’t useful to them, so try not to write too many off-topic posts. Make sure you write posts that users will gain something out of it. Write something for them to say, “Hey, that’s interesting”.

Create A Complete Guide

If you are writing a ‘How To’ post, don’t write a quick guide for it. Explain each step in detail, and use a lot of images to support your instructions. You have to pretend that your readers do not know anything about the topic. Depending on the guide you are writing, break it down into pages (as this can improve your bounce rate) and use Chapters. For example, have a look at the Complete Wave Guide written by Gina Trapani and Adam Pash from Lifehacker. Although this guide is big enough to be an eBook, you still get the general idea. Another good example for how you should write guides is Instructables. Take particular note about how many pages you have to click to read the whole instruction, and how the steps are broken down.

Write A Post Series

Writing a post series is a good marketing tactic for your blog to get your readers coming back. However, make sure you stick to a regular schedule and post once a day so readers don’t leave because they are sick of wasting their time because nothing new is on your blog.

Create An Appropriate Title

Titles are the most important part of getting a reader to click on your link and read your post. By having a title that has nothing to do with a post, the reader will just ignore it. If you have a title that explains exactly what the post is about, the reader will click it and read it. For example, if you are writing a review about a new laptop, a bad title that people will not read will be “Look what I just purchased”. Unless people have an interest in your life and what you purchased, no one will read it. However, if your title is “Review of the Median Akoya E1210 Netbook”, people who are looking at netbooks will most likely read it.

Think About Controversial Topics

Being controversial in your posts may hurt your reputation, so be very careful as to what you say. To have an impact on your readers about controversial topics, don’t lead on to strong about the topic. Present the topic a different way, or in a way that people haven’t noticed like that.

Be Short And To The Point

Posts don’t always have to be long. Short, and to the point is another way readers can be impacted by your post. If you have a brilliant idea or a thought, if written in the right way, it can spread quite a bit. Long posts can often have the reader drift off, especially if it is boring for them, and they already read quite a lot. If you have a lot of links in your article, they may often click on one and read that first, before coming back (or forgetting) to read the rest of the post.

Be Memorable

If your readers remember your post, you have achieved your goal of impacting your readers. If you think back through your life, you won’t remember every single thing that you have done, but you will remember certain scenes of your past. This could be your favourite Christmas when you were a child, or something horrific like watching your loved-one pass away. What ever it was, it impacted you and you will remember it for the rest of your life.

You have to try and do the same with your writing. You might want to do something bold and courageous that all your readers would remember. If you are producing a video, you may want to include something in the background, just like in this video. Many people would remember this video for a long time if they have watched it.

List Excellent Resources

If you list excellent resources that your readers are interested it, it will save them hours and hours searching for the content on the internet. By creating lists of items, these posts can be a very useful to all your readers, as all the information is a few clicks away.

Write About New Idea’s

Saying the same thing over and over in different ways will make your readers get bored. So post something new or extreme to keep your readers interested. Look how much publicity the Apply iPad received as that was a new idea; a never seen before device.

Take New Angles

If you struggling to come up with new idea’s, try and take a previous idea’s, but add a new angle to it. Take blogging for example. Posts were often very long and short posts just didn’t quite fit in. Then Twitter came along and the microblogging took off. Microblogging is a new angle of conventional blogging.

Another example could be that you’re covering the topic of the iPad. Most blogs would write a review on it, but by brave and write about why it sucks, or why the iPad is a larger version of the iPhone.

Write Fewer, More Detailed Posts

Very large blogs can publish 10 or more posts per day, but if you are the only one blogging on your website, you may find it will be hard to write this many posts. You then might want to write fewer, but more detailed posts once a day, rather then publish 3 smaller posts.

Write More, Less Detailed Posts

The same can be said the other way. Shorter posts, to the point, and lots of them, can entice your readers. You just have to find an equal balance that you like writing and your readers like reading.

If you follow these simple 13 simple tips, you will have a greater impact on your readers. Do you have any tips to how you can have an impact on your readers? Please share with everybody in the comments.

Things You Must Consider When People Guest Post On Your Blog

February 5th, 2010

Guest blogging is becoming more and more common as both parties benefit from someone guest posting. If you are not sure what guest blogging is, it is when someone contacts another blog and asks if they can write content for them in exchange for a link back to their site.

So if you do allow people to guest blog on your blog, here are a few things that you must make clear.

Who will own the content?

You must make it clear to the guest blogger who will own the content. This depends on your copyright status of your blog and other various factors. Just make sure you let the guest blogger know who will own their work, and what other people can possibly do with it.

Does the content have to be unique?

To have good SEO, content on your blog needs to be unique. So if you want unique content on your blog, you must state to the guest blogger that what they upload to your blog cannot be from another source on the internet, or be published elsewhere.

What are the rules on editing?

You must also be clear on the rules of editing their post. It is recommended that as a condition for guest blogging, you are allowed to edit what they have written. This can be spelling, grammar, links, or paragraphs you don’t want to appear on your blog. Make sure you edit within reason. Don’t remove all their links, or they will take their content somewhere else. But remember, you deserve to have final say what get’s published on your website.

What are the rules on links?

You must be clear on the number of links and the types of links that are permitted to use. Do you permit the use of affiliate links? How many links are they allowed to have in their post? Do you use the “NoFollow” attribute? The guest blogger must be aware of your stance on these rules of yours.

The rules of what you can do with the post?

It is also a good idea to tell the guest blogger what you can possible do with their post. Things can include:

  • Editing their post
  • Removing/deleting their post
  • Moving their post

This is important as it is unfair to the person who writes the post if you remove because you can. If you want this power, then make sure you make them aware of it.

Post acceptance

You must also tell the guest blogger that you get final say whether or not their post will be published on your site. Unless it is an open community blog where anyone can post what they want.

We would like to know what your experience of guest blogging has been like. Do you accept guest posts on your blog? Have you guest posted on other blogs? Please share your experience.

How To Create, Run, And Maintain A Blog In 11 Steps

January 24th, 2010

Creating a Blog is pretty easy now. Just install WordPress on your own server or signup for a free account on Blogger. But you may be unsure how to setup a blog that is right for you and run it. So here are a few tips for you to follow.

Choose a passion

A blog only works if the author is passionate about the subject they are writing about. So if you hate cooking, don’t write a blog about cooking the best meals. It just won’t work. Write about something that you like and will like in the next few years.

Write down your goals and plan, plan, plan!

Once you know what your Blog is going to be about, write down your goals and plan your blog; from who are your competitors, to what sort of content you are going to publish. Planning is the key for success. “Those who fail to plan, plan to fail”

View your competitors blogs

Once you defiantly know what you are going to Blog about, do some research on what your competitors are blogging about. Learn what they are doing and try to do it better. If you find something that interests who, write it down and deploy it on your own Blog.

Choose your Blogging software

Next is to choose what platform you will run your Blog with. The most common ones are WordPress and Blogger. But there are heaps more out there such as LiveJournal, Joomla, and Drupal.

Purchase a Domain Name

Next is to pick your title and your domain name (that’s if you want to purchase one). They cost about $10 per year and gives your Blog a sense of professionalism instead of using a subdomain of your hosting provider. This also allows you to move your Blog to a different server without losing all your hard work in promoting it.

Customise your Blog

Once your Blog is installed, find a theme that you like. Most free themes will do the trick and you can find them easily by doing a Google search on “Free WordPress Themes”. Research has showed that if you have good, readable content, your theme does not matter.

Install useful plug-ins

Next, go through the plug-in directory on WordPress and install plug-ins that you like and that can benefit your Blog. There are so many plug-in that your Blog should have such as All in One SEO pack and a few others.

Write your “About” Page

Another good idea is to write an “About” page. This is where you can describe your Blog in full to your readers. Make sure you tell them why you exist, what you aim to do, and how visiting your Blog will benefit them. Make sure you also tell your readers a bit about yourself as well. This helps them relate to you and increases their chance of returning.

Write your content

A Blog will not be a Blog without any content. So get your keyboard and fingers out and start writing posts. Make sure you write a good post title, and use headers to lure them in. Most people have a bunch of feeds they read everyday so they don’t spend reading posts word-for-word. Good titles and clear headings will get them reading a lot more on your blog. Promote your Blog

Once you got content that people want to read, it is time to promote your blog. There are many ways you can promote your Blog. You can do it by:

  • Advertising
  • Guest posting
  • Commenting on other blogs
  • Submit your Blog into web directors
  • Promote in forums and emails
  • Word of mouth

If you do not have much traffic to your Blog, here are for ways so you can increase traffic to your Blog.

Research your Keywords

You don’t get traffic by just writing a post. You need to use keywords to help rank your page in the top results. Carefully look at the possible keywords that you can use for your post. Ensure that those keywords get a lot of search and have low competition. These will return the best results and drive a lot of traffic to your Blog. You can use the Google Keyword Tool to research your keywords.

Write Unique and Compelling Content

Content will make or break your Blog. Your content needs to be unique, originally, compelling and interest your readers. If readers like your post, they will submit it to websites such as Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon which will give you a lot of traffic to your Blog, especially if it has been made popular.

Give people a reason to return to your Blog

Your content also needs to give your readers a reason why they should return to your Blog. If your content is dull, boring, and doesn’t contain useful information, they will never return. So give them something that they will find useful and enjoy. Such examples include giving away prizes, special offers, and exclusive events.

Be the first to promote the news
